Rev. Ruth Hoppe is a minister, priestess, teacher, and workshop facilitator with special expertise in the areas of dream work, authentic movement, creation spirituality, women’s spirituality, medicine wheel journeys, sacred sexuality, and art-as-meditation.
Education:
- B.A., Sociology, University of Missouri-St. Louis, 1969.
- Graduate study, Educational Psychology Department, Rehabilitation and Community Services Counseling, University of Utah, 1972-80 (70 credit hours).
- M.A., Culture and Creation Spirituality, Institute in Culture and Creation Spirituality, Holy Names College, 1992.
Ministerial Experience:
- Conducted rituals, including weddings, memorial services, baby welcoming ceremonies, healing circles, and ordinations, 1984-present.
- Authored article, "Not Just Another Marriage Ceremony," published in Catalyst, Salt Lake City, Utah, April 1995.
- Conducted occasional informal services at First Congregational Church, Sonoma, CA, 2002-03.
Teaching Experience:
- Taught course in Feminist Spirituality at the University of Utah, 1996-98. Developed curriculum, selected readings, lectured, led discussion and activities, graded papers, and encouraged expression of thoughts and feelings.
- Taught classes and facilitated workshops, including "Authentic Movement," "Dream Work and Dream Play", "Working From the Heart--Applying Spiritual Principles to Your Worklife," "Everything You Always Knew About Being But Temporarily Forgot," "Accessing the Meaning and Power of Your Dreams," "Sensuality Workshop for Women," "Love, Intimacy and Healing," "Reclaiming Our Sexuality as Sacred--A Workshop for Women," "Reinventing Beauty," "Heartspace Playshop--A Space for Creating," "Priestesses, Prophetesses, and Wild Women--An Introduction to Emerging Feminist Spirituality," and "Ideas Networking Party."
- VISTA Volunteer, Salt Lake City, Utah, 1969-70. Taught adults basic reading skills, mathematics, sewing, and G.E.D. test preparation.
- Taught in elementary and high school as a substitute teacher, 1986.
Other Work Experience:
- Occupational Analyst & Information Consultant, 1984-present. Conducted industry studies involving observation-interviews with workers, and writing job analysis reports. Wrote and edited occupational definitions for publication in the U.S. Dept. of Labor's Dictionary of Occupational Titles (DOT). Researched and implemented conversion of DOT to a computerized database of occupational information (O*NET). Researched certification and licensure information and edited occupational information for America’s Career Information Network (ACINet) (www.acinet.org), and developed occupational information for two career software companies.
- Jane-of-All-Trades, Missouri and Utah, 1964-73. Cleaned houses, cooked fast-food and restaurant meals, waited tables, conducted door-to-door surveys, sewed custom clothing, pressed neckties, wrapped meat, tended babies, tutored students, sold men's furnishings, calculated insurance premiums, typed letters, etc.
- Welfare Caseworker, St. Louis, Missouri 1967-68. Investigated applications for public welfare, made case decisions, and provided emergency services to clients.
- Employment Counselor, Utah Dept. of Employment Security, 1973-1984. Counseled clients on career choice, job seeking skills, and overcoming barriers to employment. Designed and conducted "Options," a workshop for women re-entering the job market that provided training in career exploration, self-esteem, communications skills, physical fitness, and stress management.
Accomplishments:
- Organized and coordinated three "Say Yes to Life!" community celebrations in Salt Lake City from 1988 through 1990 with the purpose: "Everyone is invited to express their potential for peace, prosperity, health, freedom, joy, and our harmonious connection with Mother Earth this day and every day!"
- Lectured on "Working From the Heart--Applying Spiritual Principles to Your Worklife" at "Restoring the Balance" seminar, Salt Lake City, 1990.
- Founded and directed Heartspace, a nondenominational spiritual center, dedicated to providing compassionate, safe, and playful experiences for people undergoing spiritual growth, utilizing art, movement, humor, and heart-sharing,1990-1998.
- Researched and wrote a master's project entitled, Reclaiming the Sacredness of Our Sexuality--Women Giving Birth to Ourselves, 1992.
- Completed Love, Intimacy & Sexuality Workshops, sponsored by the Human Awareness Institute, Foster City, California, 1990-2004.
- Participated in numerous hikes, backpacking trips, whitewater rafting and canoeing adventures in the wilderness of Utah and other western states.
- Student of the Rosicrucian Order-AMORC for 20 years.
- Facilitated weekly authentic movement group in Sonoma, CA 2001-2003.
Volunteer Work:
- Taught dream work class for seniors at the Redwood Retirement Community, Mill Valley, CA, 1999-2000.
- Workshop Team Member for the Human Awareness Institute (HAI) 2001- present. Currently assist facilitators and participants at workshops and promote local HAI events.
